There are literally thousands of tombs on the West Bank of Luxor (Thebes). Archaeologists have explored and numbered a good deal of them, but there are still many to be explored and catalogued. The tombs cover the areas listed below:
SHEIKH ABD EL-QURNA
There are approximately 146 numbered tombs in this area which are amongst some of the most beautiful. Most date from the New Kingdom (18th Dynasty).
EL-KHOKHA
East of ‘Sheikh el-Qurna’ is EL-KHOKHA. There are some 55 numbered tombs dating from the New Kingdom (18th Dynasty), including some from the 19th Dynasty. In addition, there are some 5 Old Kingdom Tombs.
EL-ASSASIF
Slightly north of El-Khokha is EL-ASSASIF. Here there are some 42 tombs, mostly from the New Kingdom (18th Dynasty) and later.
DRA ABU EL-NAGA
North-east of El-Assasif is an area called DRA ABU EL-NAGA. This hillside is dotted with about 84 numbered tombs mostly belonging to officials and priests from about the 17th Dynasty to the 20th Dynasty. Also amongst them are the tombs of some 17th Dynasty Rulers.
EL-TARIF
North of Dra Abu El-Naga is an area known as EL-TARIF, which contains tombs in rows from about the Late Second Intermediate Period to the early Middle Kingdom.
QURNAT MURAI
South of Sheikh abd el-Qurna, near the Temple of Merenptah, is a hill called Gurret Murrai. Here there are 18 tombs dating to the Ramesside Period which have been excavated and numbered.
DEIR EL BAHRI
Just north of Sheikh abd el-Qurna is the well known Deir el-Bahari area which contains the Temple of Hatshepsut. Here there are 12 tombs that have been explored and numbered by arachaeologists.
DEIR EL MEDINA
The Worker’s Village which was at it height during the Ramesside Period, lies in a Valley between the small hill of Qurnat Murai and the western slopes of the Theban Hills. The tombs of the Dier el Medina are situated on a slope in very close proximity to the houses of the workers for whom they were made.
MISCELLANEOUS TOMBS
In areas not listed above are some other 7 tombs which have been excavated to date and numbered.
